Got Our First Hay Field Cut

Today I went over to Tyler Creek to do an insect count in the crick. I was put in a group and we got to go with a fine net and scoop around seaweed and rocks looking for little insects in the water. The Coldwater Rive Watershed Council and Trout Unlimited do these kinds of studies to better understand what is in the water, where the fish will be, and how the ecosystem in the water is thriving. It was a cool event seeing all the different insects that hide in the water and learning about them. Later when I came home, dad had gotten the 495 haybine out and hooked up to the 766 ready to cut hay. He had greased it up and had it ready to go. We went for a quick ride over to the back hay field and saw that it was waist high and pretty thick. Looking at the two other fields, they were not nearly as thick or tall as that one, so unhooked the 766 and put the haybine back into road mode and drove over to the field. The haybine is a 12 ft cut, and in order for it to go down the road we have to turn one wheel, take off the other and put it on the back end and then attach the hitch to the haybine. When we got to the field, we had to turn the wheel, take the other one off and put it on the side of the equipment, and then hook the 766 up to it. Dad started cutting the 7 acre field at 3:28 and finished 1 hour and 50 minutes later. I rode with him for a little bit and while I was riding, we got a turkey. Animals don't always move when they hear loud noises, they just stay hidden. I had to go out with the side by side and pick up the pieces in the hay and toss them in the woods. After we got the haybine brought back to the farm, I went and mowed the front yard at the house because that was what was not mowed from my mom and sister. I have to make it look the best and mow it in a certain direction. Paige and Mom mowed both the farm and house yards today. We later went on a side by side ride down the road and stopped to talk with Fuss's about cows and steers and what kind of feed they should have.
