Chugging Along

Yesterday after work dad helped me replace the belt on the mower. We had to disconnect the mower deck from the mower itself to get the belt on. I got it put back together and then I went and mowed the ditches alongside the road. Dad worked on splitting wood by the road at the farm for a while I was gone. When I got back to the farm, our friend Bryan was there. He helped us with some plumbing in the house. We went out to the barn and looked at the cows. He confirmed that I should be having 3 more calves this month. We talked about raising the steers and also about breeding cows. I got some new sunflower seeds in the mail, so I planted a few more of that kind in the greenhouse. Dad brought up all the wood he had split and dumped it by the lean-to so it could be stacked. Dad worked on weeding some of the flower beds in the evening. Today I did not personally get much done around the house. I worked on filling cracks in my boss's driveway and mowing his grass which took me almost 12 hours.

While I was working, dad finished taking down the strip of fencing in the pasture and replaced it with a new one for me. Mom and dad had also mowed the yard around the house, so I wouldn't have to find time to do it. Mom told me that this morning one of the calves had stuck its head through the hog panel fence and got it stuck, so she had to cut the wire to get it out. I went up there and put up a strand of electric wire in an L shape along the bottom of the existing fence, so they won't try it again. I fed the cows some hay and gave the cow her grain. I watched as the calves and a cow checked out the fence and got zapped. The calves couldn't seem to understand what happened when they got shocked because they kept going back to check it out. I put 19 pieces of wood on the fire tonight and closed up the barns.
